Real Sociedad were held to a 0-0 draw by Juventus, but are still well placed to qualify after increasing the gap over Olympiakos and Galatasaray to four points. Denoueix put out a full strength side for once after being criticised for his line up in the last match, with De Pedro finally making his Champions League debut and Nihat accompanying Kovacevic up front. And the Turkish forward was to prove a nightmare for the pink-shirted Italian defence, testing Buffon twice early on with a shot from close up and then with a header. And he could have scored as well later in the first half when he just failed to get a touch on Aranzábal's cross as it rolled across goal.

Juventus had obviously come looking for the point which would give them passage through to the next stage, but they were always dangerous on the counter-attack and Westerveld had to save from Miccoli when he tried to find the far top corner just before half time. But the Spaniards had the best chances to take the three points, and Buffon blocked another effort from Nihat on the near post after the interval with Kovacevic better placed to score. In the end though a point apiece was a good result for both teams, and given the other group scoreline, Lippi's side are already sure of joining Real Madrid in the last sixteen.
