Deportivo bounced back from their big defeat at Monaco to beat AEK Athens 3-0 and move close to reaching the last 16. With Diego Tristán injured and Luque not fully fit, Pandiani led the attack, and Duscher came in to midfield in place of Mauro Silva, who was also injured. The Greeks had only picked up one point in the competition, against Depor in the first leg, but they gave the local fans a fright when ex Sevilla midfielder Tsartas hit the bar with a long shot.

Midway through the half though Depor took the lead, Héctor getting his first goal for the club with a thundering shot into the roof of the net. For a few minutes Depor relaxed and visiting forward Okkas had a penalty appeal turned down by English referee Michael Riley, but after the break the Galicians came out with renewed force and Valerón added a second goal after Víctor set him up.

By now Depor were looking comfortable, and Irureta rested Valerón to bring on Luque. And within ten minutes the young striker had got his name on the scoresheet as well, finishing off after Pandiani beat the offside trap and squared the ball across. After that they ran down the clock, extending their run of clean sheets at home in Europe to five matches.

The bad news though was that their next and last opponents PSV equalised late on in Monaco, limiting the gap between the two sides to three points. However with a 2-0 result in favour of the Spaniards from their earlier fixture, they can even afford to lose that match by one goal and still finish second in their group.
