Real Madrid held on to top spot in their group with a 1-2 win over Olympique Marseille. All eyes were on Zinedine Zidane who was returning to his home town, and the French midfielder was given a standing ovation at the start of the match. But even though Madrid lined up with all their star players, the home side came closest to scoring when first Drogba and then ex Celta Vigo striker Mido broke through, and a few minutes later Swedish referee Anders Frisk waved away claims for a penalty by Roberto Carlos on Drogba.

Ten minutes before the break though the Spaniards were awarded a free kick when Christanval fouled Ronaldo, and David Beckham stepped up to crack home Real Madrid's 600th goal in the European Cup. The French side didn't give up though, and Casillas had to be at his best early in the second half to save from Vachousek and Drogba. And soon afterwards Marseille got the goal they were looking for when Mido rose to head Vachousek's cross into the roof of the net.

The French side pushed forward for the winner, and Drogba headed just wide. But they were leaving gaps at the back, and shortly after Figo headed just wide, Raúl broke through on the left and slid the ball in for Ronaldo to poke it past Runje. Raúl almost made it three with a long lob from the halfway line which just cleared the bar, but Casillas had to save the day in the end with another point blank save from Drogba. Even with the win though Madrid are not 100% sure of top spot as their next rivals Porto stayed within three points of them, although the Portuguese side would have to win by three clear goals in the Bernabeu stadium in a fortnight's time to take that honour away from them.
