A mistake by Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn helped Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the Olympic stadium in Munich. It was a freezing cold night in Germany, with temperatures well below zero and snow lying on the ground, conditions the Spaniards were not accustomed to. Carlos Queiroz could count on a full strength squad though, whereas his opposite number Ottmar Hitzfeld was only sure of including his two German players, Kahn and Ballack, after the former underwent a series of painkilling injections and the latter was considered well enough after suffering a bout of bronchitis.

The game got off to a lively start, with Roberto Carlos close to putting through his own net and Ronaldo being closed down with Raúl free alongside him. Casillas had to save from Zé Roberto and Hargreaves, and Kahn did the same from Ronaldo at the other end. There were no goals at the break though, and Hitzfeld brought on Salihamidzic who forced Casillas into a couple of saves later in the half. Ex Deportivo striker Roy Makaay headed over and Ballack shot wide after the restart, and with a quarter of an hour to go Makaay put his side ahead when he headed Pizarro's cross wide of Casillas.

Madrid's only real effort in the second half had been a Beckham free kick which went over, but with six minutes to go it looked like he would get another chance when his side won another free kick just outside the area. But this time it was Roberto Carlos who struck the shot, and to the surprise of everyone, the ball squeezed through the hands of Kahn and in to the net. It was a vital away goal for the Spaniards, and it meant that they had finally ended their run of seven away defeats against the Germans. Madrid must now be favourites to go through when the two sides meet again in a fortnight's time.
