A good result by Deportivo, who have a more than even chance of reaching the last eight after beating Juventus 1-0. Irureta's side were playing the Italians for the fourth season in a row, looking for revenge after their elimination from the competition last season. And they completely dominated their opponents, inspired by Valerón who had a hand in most of his side's moves. The Spanish international midfielder was the first to test Buffon with a long shot, and the visiting keeper did well to push out Víctor's dangerous cross a few minutes later as the home side piled on the pressure. Del Piero could have scored though at the other end had Molina not reacted quickly, but eight minutes before the break the Spaniards took the lead, Luque thumping the ball into the net as it fell to the ground after Thuram headed Scaloni's cross up into the air.

Trezeguet injured his shoulder in a clash with Molina just before half time and was replaced by Miccoli, and Birindelli came on a few minutes later for the limping Montero. But Depor kept up the attack looking for a second goal, and Víctor went close twice, the first time shooting wide when free and then bringing a reaction save out of Buffon as his effort was deflected by a defender. Del Piero could have got one back but shot wide after Andrade only half cleared, but otherwise the Galicians were on top, and Sergio fired another shot just over the bar following a set piece free kick. All in all a convincing victory for Irureta's side, but they would probably have liked a goal or two more to take to the Delle Alpi stadium in two weeks' time.
