Deportivo La Coruña went through in style to the last eight of the competition after a 0-1 win against last year's runners-up Juventus. Irureta surprised everyone including Pandiani rather than Diego Tristán at centre forward, but the move paid off in the twelfth minute when the Uruguayan striker ran on to a long free kick from Molina to get between Ferrara and Montero and beat Buffon from close up.

The Italians were missing several key players, and after losing Del Piero to an injury early on they didn't trouble the Spanish goal until close to half time, when Molina stopped an effort from Miccoli at point blank range. Appiah did hit the bar after the break with a long, dipping shot, but Lippi's side never looked like scoring the three goals they needed to turn the game around, and Naybet almost added to their woes when he hit the bar on a rapid breakaway late in injury time.
