Real Sociedad's first ever appearance in the Champions' League is over, and they are out of the competition after losing 1-0 at Olympique Lyon. The Basque side were a goal down from the first leg, but Raynald Denoueix took a cautious approach at the beginning, with five men in midfield and Nihat on the bench. Alkiza shot just wide and Gabilondo had another effort saved by substitute keeper Vercoutre, who had replaced the injured Coupet early in the first half, but the French team also had their chances and Alberto had to be at his best to keep the scores level at the break.

The introduction of De Pedro and Nihat on the hour mark revitalised Real's game, and Xabi Alonso had a header cleared off the line by Deflandres. But in the next play, Govou broke down the left and played the ball in for Juninho to shoot in off the far post and put the game beyond the reach of the Spaniards. The 3,000 or so travelling fans went home disappointed, but at least their team had put on a brave performance.
