Villarreal and Racing Santander are Spain's two representatives in the Intertoto cup this year after Barcelona qualified directly for the UEFA cup on the last day of the season. Racing were not originally planning to play in the competition but applied for the vacant spot and will enter the tournament in the second round at the beginning of July. Villarreal are participating for the second year running and come in a round later.
