Villarreal moved a step closer to their second Intertoto final in a row, although they missed the opportunity to wrap up the tie in the first leg. Víctor, Jorge López and Guayre all had chances to put the Spaniards ahead in the first half, but it was not until a minute before the interval that they took the lead, José Marí beating Belic after good work by Jorge López. It was the ex Atlético Madrid striker's first goal for his new side.

The lead only lasted eight minutes though before Dosek levelled the scores with a low shot. After that the nerves and the tiredness started to show, and Floro ordered his men back to defend the scoreline. But after a few tense moments, the visitors won back control and held on to take a valuable score draw back for next Wednesday's second leg in the Madrigal stadium. If they get through that, they will play the winner of the semi-final between Heerenveen and NK Koper, which currently stands at 2-0 in favour of the Dutch side.
