Intertoto Cup - second round, first leg

Racing Santander 1 - Györi Eto 0

Only one week after the cup final closed the 2002-3 season, the new campaign is under way. Racing Santander were the first team to play a competitive match, winning the first leg of their Intertoto Cup second round match against Hungary's Györi thanks to a goal late in the first half from Coromina. With most of their star players on holiday, the Cantabrians lined up with a makeshift squad which included several players from the junior teams and two new signings, Epitié and Juvenal. Coromina gave them the lead following a Pablo Lago corner, and should have gone further ahead when the visiting keeper saved a Pablo Lago penalty in the first minutes of the second half. However in the end Bakhar had to clear a last minute effort from Nemeth off the line to keep the clean sheet which gives the Spaniards the edge for the second leg in Hungary next Saturday.
