Villarreal moved a step closer to their second Intertoto final in a row, although they missed the opportunity to wrap up the tie in the first leg against Czech side FC Brno. Víctor, Jorge López and Guayre all had chances to put the Spaniards ahead in the first half, but it was not until a minute before the interval that they took the lead, José Marí beating Belic after good work by Jorge López. The lead only lasted eight minutes before Dosek levelled the scores with a low shot, but Benito Floro's side held on to take a valuable score draw back for next Wednesday's second leg in the Madrigal stadium.
