Spain's under 21 side assured themselves of first place in their group with a 2-0 win over Ukraine. In the absence of Fernando Torres, Portillo was given the number nine shirt, and it was the Real Madrid striker's blocked shot which led to Valdo volleying home the first goal on the half hour mark. Víctor Valdés had to make two crucial saves in the second half as Ukraine bounced back, but substitute Rúben Castro put the score beyond doubt late on when he scored on the rebound after his first shot had hit the foot of the post.
