Copa del Rey final

Real Madrid 2 - Zaragoza 3

Zaragoza beat Real Madrid in a thrilling cup final which was only settled in extra time. David Beckham put Madrid ahead midway through the first half when his long free kick bent away from Lainez and in off the post. But Víctor Muñoz's side came back to lead at the break, Dani collecting Savio's cross to fire a shot past César on the half hour mark and David Villa getting a second from the penalty spot after Guti brought him down in the area on the stroke of half time. Roberto Carlos levelled the scores again with another well struck free kick only three minutes after the restart, and when Carmona Méndez sent off Cani for a second bookable offence with a quarter of the game still to go, Madrid appeared to be back on top. But Zaragoza held on to take the game into extra time, and numbers were evened up when Guti also got a second yellow card. Then with nine minutes to go Movilla left the ball for Galletti to strike a bouncing shot past César and send his fans wild. (17.03.04)
