UEFA cup, quarter final first leg

Girondins Bordeaux 1 - Valencia 2

Valencia came back from a goal down to beat Bordeaux 1-2 and put one foot in the semi-finals. Rafa Benítez lined up with a defensive side, but it was one the French teams two Spanish players Albert Riera who opened the scoring with a free kick from out on the right wing which caught Cañizares off guard. Bordeaux were left with ten men though when Mavuba was sent off for kicking out at Sissoko with only half an hour gone, and Valencia scored twice in the last quarter of an hour to win the match, Baraja taking a return pass from Sissoko to beat Ramé and Rufete following up after Canobbio's effort came back off the post.

Glasgow Celtic 1 - Villarreal 1

If Valencia do get through this round, their opponents in the semi-final could well be neighbours Villarreal, who carried on their great run in their first ever appearance in Europe with a 1-1 draw at Celtic. Paquito's side took an early lead when Josico headed Roger's cross down past Marshall, and could have scored one or two more as they dominated the first half. Marshall saved from Sonny Anderson and Battaglia hit the bar after the restart, but Larsson had a goal disallowed for hand ball when he charged down Reina's clearance, and the Swedish striker finally headed the equaliser from Agathe's cross with twenty minutes to go.
