Second division, week 32

Levante failed to regain top spot after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Getafe on Sunday lunchtime. Reggi's second half strike was cancelled out by Nano, and the Madrid based side keep up their push for promotion. Getafe were overtaken later in the day though by Alavés, who beat Las Palmas 1-2 thanks to a last minute goal by Edu Alonso. Pepe Mel's side are now only two points behind third placed Sporting. Meanwhile Recreativo moved up to sixth after a 1-2 win at Córdoba, Uche getting both goals for the Huelva based team.

Down in the lower reaches, Xerez put their financial problems behind them to beat struggling Málaga B 2-1, and Salamanca finally ended their run of nine games without a victory after beating bottom club Algeciras 1-0, Raúl Sánchez getting his 15th of the season from the penalty spot. Elche manager Oscar Ruggeri saved his job for another week after his side won 2-0 against Eibar, and Ciudad Murcia edged away from the danger zone and left opponents Leganés a point above the bottom four after holding them to a 0-0 draw. Numancia made it twenty-two points out of a possible twenty-four after beating Cádiz 2-0, and they return to the top of the table pending Levante's game on Sunday. Kome and Pineda got the goals either side of half time. Third placed Sporting couldn't keep up the pace though, and they fell to a 1-0 defeat in a bad tempered game at Terrassa. Quique Martín scored early on for the Catalans, who ended the match with nine men.

The other two games played on Saturday involved four teams fighting to avoid relegation. A last second goal by Keko gave Tenerife a 1-1 draw at Rayo Vallecano, a result which takes the Canary Islanders out of the bottom four pending Sunday's matches. Almería got ahead of both of them though after winning their local derby against Poli Ejido 1-2. (10.04.04)
