Second division, week 35

A strange weekend in the second division, where none of the top four sides were able to win. Leaders Numancia were defeated 1-0 by Tenerife, a result which takes the Canary Islanders away from the danger zone for now, and fourth placed Sporting Gijón were held to a 1-1 draw by Leganés, who still drop into the bottom four despite the point. Under the circumstances the best result amongst the leaders was second placed Levante's 0-0 draw at Recreativo Huelva on Sunday lunchtime, leaving the Andalucians six points adrift of the top three.

Elsewhere Cádiz pulled off an extraordinary comeback, fighting back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Salamanca, and Eibar's slim hopes of promotion were dashed when they lost 0-2 to Ciudad Murcia. Almería avoided dropping in to the bottom four after defeating Elche 3-1, but although they are now in fifteenth place they are still only four points above next to bottom Las Palmas. The last game of the evening between Algeciras and Xerez was called off due to heavy rain in the South of Spain, and the fixture has provisionally been rescheduled for next Wednesday. (02.05.04)

A disappointing result for third placed Alavés on Saturday evening, the Vitoria based side being held to a 0-0 draw at home by Poli Ejido. Getafe took advantage to close up to within three points of them after beating Terrassa 2-0, Alberto and Pachón getting the goals. The real drama of the day came from the lower reaches though, with Málaga B coming from a goal down to beat fellow strugglers Rayo Vallecano 2-1. The Andalucians are out of the bottom four as a result. Meanwhile next to bottom Las Palmas won 1-2 at Córdoba to move to within a point of Rayo. (01.05.04)
