Spain took their revenge on European champions Portugal with a 5-2 victory that takes them through to a semi-final with Argentina in Helsinki next Wednesday.

Juan Santiesteban was missing his star winger Silva, suspended for two games after being sent off against the USA, and Oskitz came back in to the side in his place. Keeper Mandaluniz and striker Xisco both got another run out as Adan and David had not fully recovered from injuries.

For a few minutes it looked as if their neighbours were going to repeat last May's final when Curto headed them into the lead from Bruno Gama's cross. But by half time Spain were ahead, Sergio Sánchez volleying in Jurado's free kick to level the scores and Arsenal's new signing Cesc Fábregas heading a cross from Sisi down past Felgueiras. And Sisi should have extended the lead before the referee's whistle when he waited to long to control Xisco's cross in front of an open goal.

Xisco did make it three though five minutes in to the second half, and shortly afterwards hit the bar with another effort. The Villarreal striker then set up Fábregas for him to add a fourth ten minutes from the end, and although Vieira pulled one back with a well struck free kick, Jurado wrapped things up from the penalty spot in injury time after the referee ruled that Xisco had been pulled back by Diaz.

Spain reach the semi-final stage for the first time in six years, Europe's only representative against three South American teams. Their rivals next Wednesday will be South American champions Argentina, who so far have not let in a goal in the tournament. The other semi-final is between Columbia and Brazil, who beat Freddy Adu's United States.
