St. Cyr-sur-Loire. Spain recorded a comfortable win over Northern Ireland in their last group match to reach the semi-finals of the competition. The hero of the night was Marc Pedraza, who was given his chance in the line up thanks to the injury to first choice striker César. The Espanyol forward hit the crossbar early on and completed a hat-trick either side of half time, the first after Javi García laid the ball back, the second with a header from a Marcos cross and the third from close to goal. The Irish came back briefly, with Doherty pulling one back with a long shot and O'Connor hitting the bar. But the youngsters were very much on top, and after Piqué headed against the post and Carson saved well from Carmona, Diego Capel finished things off with a fourth goal. Marcos and Pereira could have added to the score late on, but Spain had done enough to finish second in their group behind hosts France, and they go on to play group B winners England in the next round on Wednesday evening.
