A first goal for his new club from Ricardo Oliveira gave Valencia a 0-1 victory over Sweden's AIK Solna. The Brazilian striker ran on to an excellent pass from Juan Sánchez to drill the ball past the keeper early in the second half and give his side a useful lead for the second leg.

Rafa Benítez had made several changes for this game, bringing in Palop, Sissoko and Canobbio. Juan Sánchez came in for Aimar, who was reserved for the Real Madrid game at the weekend, and with Pellegrino and Ayala injured, David Navarro accompanied Marchena in defence.

Palop in particular showed he is an able substitute for Cañizares, saving from Ishizaki early on. But with Hoch playing as lone striker, the Swedes hardly approached the Valencia goal for the rest of the first half. Valencia too were finding it hard to penetrate a well organised defence, but shortly after Palop was called into action again to save from Kah, Juan Sánchez found a gap to set up Oliveira.

After that the Spaniards did what they are best at, sit back and defend their lead. Palop had to save again from Ishizaki, but otherwise they were not troubled and should have no trouble finishing things off in their Mestalla stadium in three weeks' time.
