Villarreal were the only Spanish side to struggle, and their 0-0 draw at home to Trabzonspor will mean a difficult return leg in Turkey in three weeks' time. The Intertoto Cup winners were making their UEFA cup debut in front of a capacity crowd, and Benito Floro lined up with Sonny Anderson, José Marí, Víctor and Riquelme all in the side. However after a high pressure first twenty minutes their challenge faded against a Turkish side with experience in the competition who had come to defend and look for a goal on the breakaway.

Shortly before half time Sonny Anderson should have scored when free in front of goal, but wasted the chance. Floro decided to replace him soon after the break with full back Javi Venta to free up Belletti for more attacking duties, a decision which the crowd didn't like. But even with the new formation they were unable to create any danger, and only Riquelme was able to create anything in attack. The result means they have now to score in Turkey in the second leg to have any chance of going through. A 1-1 draw though would still be enough.
