Mallorca were the first Spanish side to kick off on Thursday evening with a visit to Spartak Moscow, and they came away comfortable 0-3 winners thanks to a great second half performance. Luis Aragonés's side didn't let the adverse weather conditions get to them, despite below zero temperatures and snow in the second half, and once they had got over a shaky start they took control of the match. Young central defender Ramis had a header saved by Lomaia and Marcos and Eto'o both went close before the break, and Finidi was causing problems down the wings.

Nevio Scala's side were clearly showing their lack of match practise during their winter break, although for a few minutes in the second half they came back, with Pavlenko shooting wide and then having another effort cleared off the line by Lussenhoff with keeper Miki beaten. But midway through the half Eto'o kept his feet to score a vital away goal from a wide angle, and Miki made an important save from Pavlenko soon afterwards to keep his team ahead.

As usual Aragonés used his substitutes wisely, and with ten minutes to go two of them combined to score a second, Correa intercepting Kebe's headed back pass and seeing his shot deflected to Toni González, who scored into an empty net. Five minutes later it was the turn of Jesús Perera to add to the tally just two minutes after he replaced Eto'o, and the visitors were home and dry. The return leg in Spain next week should now be a formality, and Mallorca will hope that this is the result they needed to get their season back on track.
