On a tragic night when nobody really wanted to play football, the only Spanish side to do well were the ones who on paper had the hardest game, Villarreal beating a depleted Roma 2-0 in the last match of the evening.

Both goals came in the first half, with José Marí setting up Sonny Anderson just before the half hour mark and adding a second goal himself a few minutes later with a header from Roger's corner.

Paquito's side could have increased their lead later on, with Riquelme on top form and Roger shooting just wide of Zotti's post. But with a clean sheet in their favour, the result should be enough to see them through into the last eight.
