Barcelona could not extend their good league form to the UEFA cup, and they were knocked out by a gutsy Celtic side who prevented them from scoring in both legs. Some 25,000 Scottish fans reportedly invaded the Condal City, although only seven or eight thousand of them found their way into the ground, with the rest filling the bars in the surrounding coastal resorts to watch the game on the television.

The Catalans were missing both first choice strikers Saviola and Kluivert, the former suspended for two matches and the latter still injured, but they still created many chances. A great performance though by Marshall kept them at bay, the reserve keeper getting his chance after Douglas was suspended following his red card for fighting with Motta at half time in the first leg. The youngster cut out an effort from Gerard as early as the first minute, and made spectacular saves from Gabri, Luis García and substitute Sergio García after the break.
