Valencia joined Villarreal as the only Spanish sides in the last eight, although it took a "silver goal" from Vicente in the first half of extra time to see them through. The Turkish side put up a good fight, defending their one goal lead from the first leg, and Rafa Benítez started to regret that he had put out a second string line up. Only Canobbio had got close to Botonjic's goal in the first 45 minutes, and the manager was forced to bring on Mista and Vicente in the second half.

In the end that was the deciding factor, both substitutes getting the goals. Mista it was who levelled the tie soon after coming on to take the match into extra time, and things swung their way when Genclerbirligi defender Ozkan picked up a second booking in the 85th minute. Four minutes into the extension Vicente hit the winner from a cross by a third substitute Angulo, and their was no need for the second 15 minute period. Valencia play Bordeaux in the next round.
