Group A table

Another disappointment for Deportivo, who were beaten once again by a Monaco team who are rapidly becoming one of their bogey sides. The French league club had given then a biggest ever 8-3 pasting last season, and seemed to be on their way to another big score when Adebayor set up first Kallon and then ex Barcelona striker Saviola for two goals in the opening ten minutes.

Gradually though Depor got back in to the game, with Víctor breaking through but seeing his shot tipped away from goal by Roma. Molina had to come out his area to close down another dangerous breakaway by Saviola, but Pandiani should have scored near half time when he was left alone near to goal, the keeper managing to get across in time to block his shot.

Both sides had their chances after the restart, with Pandiani having another effort saved and Kallon firing just over the top from long range. Valerón thought himself unlucky not to be given a penalty when Roma pushed him from behind (Real Madrid were awarded one for an identical incident today), but Adebayor came closest of all to scoring when he crashed a long shot against the bar. A poor result though for the Galicians, who ended the day lying bottom of the table with only one point in their first two games.
