A disastrous result for Valencia, who are now down in third spot in group G after a 1-5 thrashing by Inter Milan. Nobody expected the final result when the first half finished without goals, especially as Fontana had made a fingertip save from Di Vaio and Rufete had almost scored directly from a corner for the locals. But Stankovic put the Italians ahead only two minutes in to the second half, and Vieri got a second only two minutes later after Curro Torres could only head Adriano's cross up into the air, the striker volleying home his first goal in several months.

Valencia came back strongly after that, with Fontana having to save from Caneira's header, Baraja and Rufete shooting just wide and Di Vaio crashing a shot against the post. Stankovic had missed an easy chance in between, but Aimar gave the Spaniards hope when he latched on to Di Vaio's pass to shoot wide of the keeper. And they could have been level had the referee not turned down Corradi's appeal for a penalty when brought down by Materazzi.

Valencia were taking risks by now though, with Corradi on for central defender Caniera, and they paid the price when substitute Van der Meyde ran through to beat Cañizares just a minute after coming on. Adriano rounded off an excellent evening with a fourth goal just five minutes later, and his substitute Julio Cruz made it an embarrassing five in injury time as the locals threw everything forward. It was a bitter blow for Ranieri's side, and with Werder Bremen winning at Anderlecht they ended the day out of the qualifying places. They now have a lot to do if they are to make it through to the next stage of the competition.
