Real Madrid came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Dynamo Kiev and keep themselves en route for a place in the last sixteen. García Remón was returning to the country where he earned his nickname "the Cat of Odessa" 31 years ago, playing in goal against Kiev for the side he now manages and putting in the performance of a lifetime. But his side got off to a bad start this time, getting caught out early on when Yussuf's shot ballooned off Pavón past Casillas for a first goal, and giving away a second midway through the first half when Verpakovskis cut past Salgado to shoot low across Casillas.

But Madrid came back, with Ronaldo shooting straight at the keeper and Zidane putting another chance just wide of the post. Seven minutes before the break Figo found Raúl for him to pull one back, and the Portuguese midfielder levelled the scores on the stroke of half time from the penalty spot after Ronaldo was brought down by El Kaddouri. Kleber missed a sitter only seconds after the restart, but otherwise the Spaniards had the best chances, and Shovkovskiy had to be at his best to keep out two efforts from Figo. In the end though a point each, and with Bayer Leverkusen also drawing at Roma in the other group game, Madrid, Kiev and Bayer share the lead at the top of the table, all with seven points.
