Villarreal reached an Intertoto cup final for the third year in a row after beating Hamburg in their second leg match. Pellegrini's side were defending a slim one goal lead from the first leg, and with Sonny Anderson and Ballesteros injured, Víctor and Gonzalo Rodríguez were drafted into the starting line up. The game followed along the lines of the first leg, with the Spaniards well on top but unable to convert their chances early on. Wachter had to push an effort by Víctor from wide out around the post and José Marí, Roger and Senna all tested the keeper before the break to no avail.

Hamburg started to get back into the match after the break, and Villarreal were let off the hook when Mpenza's shot rebounded off Arruabarrena onto the post. A few minutes later though José Marí picked up a ball outside of the area, and after making himself space, fired in a strong shot wide of the keeper. The goal meant that the German side needed to score three times to win the tie, and they were necer going to do that against Reina and his well-ordered defence. Now only Atlético Madrid are standing in the way of a return to the UEFA cup, and a possible repeat of last season's heroics.
