Both Spanish clubs won through to the semi-finals of the competition, although neither had it easy against opponents who proved to be more worthy adversaries than expected. Villarreal kicked off the first match with a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg against Spartak Moscow, but within ten minutes the tie was level after Pavlyuchenko opened the scoring for the Russians. With a 2-4 victory from the away leg, Atlético Madrid didn't foresee any problems in their tie later in the evening against Zlin. However the Czech side surprised César Ferrando's team with a goal from Malar early on, and when Kroca made it 0-2 with twenty minutes to go an upset was on the cards. Atlético held on though to go through on the away goal rule and set up a semi-final against OFK Belgrade, who they visit in the first leg midweek.
