Champions' League, third qualifying round, first leg

Both Spanish sides emerged unscathed from their first leg ties in the Champions' league qualifying rounds, with Real Madrid beating Wisla Krakow 0-2 in Poland and Deportivo drawing 0-0 at Shelbourne. Morientes was the saviour for Madrid, coming on in the second half for Ronaldo and scoring twice, the first from Beckham's cross and the second in injury time after Roberto Carlos set him up. Depor let their Irish opponents off the hook, Luque and Munitis wasting easy chances after the interval, although Munúa (who replaced the injured Molina in the first half) had to make an important save from Moore near the end to keep the scores level.
