Villarreal beat Atlético Madrid in an exciting penalty shoot-out to take their second Intertoto cup title in successive years and qualify for this season's UEFA cup competition. Pellegrini's side were clear favourites after a two goal win in the first leg, but strikes from Ibagaza and García Calvo in the second half levelled the tie, and only a penalty save by Reina from Jorge took the game into extra time. With no further score, the game went to penalties, but misses by García Calvo, Nano and Arizmendi meant that Villarreal went through 3-1 on spot kicks. (24.08.04)
