UEFA cup, league stage day 2

Spanish sides struggled this week in the second day of the league stage of the UEFA cup, with Athletic Bilbao and Zaragoza losing their games away from home and only Sevilla picking up the three points.

Athletic Bilbao were beaten 3-1 by Vicente Del Bosque's Basiktas, with John Carew playing a starring role for the Turkish side. The ex Valencia striker set up Günes for the opening goal, and although Ezquerro equalised soon after the restart, the big man was there again a few minutes later to poke the ball past Lafuente. Akin rounded things off with a late third, taking his side level with the Basques in a four way tie at the top of their group.

Zaragoza were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Austria Vienna, a result which leaves both them and their opponents three points behind group leaders Dnipro. The match was played at a slow pace, and although Villa and Moreno had the first chances, the Austrians almost took the lead when Vachousek's free kick hit the bar just before the break. The home side got the only goal though twenty minutes from the end when Gilewicz picked up Vastic's pass to score.

Sevilla started off their participation in the league stage though with a 2-0 win over Alemmania Aachen. The Andalusians took the lead early on when Aranda followed up after the keeper saved from Baptista, but the German second division side caused more problems than expected before the break. Baptista won a penalty though a quarter of an hour from the end and converted it himself for the final result. (04.11.04).
