Athletic Bilbao were surprisingly knocked out of the competition after losing 1-2 at home to Austria Vienna. After a scoreless draw in the first leg mid-week, the Basque side were favourites to go through to a fourth round match with Zaragoza. And when Yeste converted a penalty in the twentieth minute after Dospel handled in the area they seemed to be on their way. However Sionko equalized ten minutes later with a vital away goal which swung the tie in their favour, and with Athletic throwing everything forward, the midfielder got his second of the night twenty minutes from the end.
