Spain's under 17 side failed to qualify for the finals after finishing second in their group to Switzerland. Juan Santiesteban's team needed a big score against Poland to be sure of topping their mini-league, and they seemed to be on their way when Diego Capel set up Real Madrid's Bueno to open the scoring in the twentieth minute of the match. But even though they couldn't add to their lead, for ten minutes or so they were through after Switzerland's opponents Denmark equalised their opponents earlier goal in the other group match. However the Swiss scored again to win 2-1, and with Spain's tie ending 1-0, the central European side qualify on superior goal difference.
