Spain's under 21 side are struggling to qualify for the European finals after falling to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Serbia Montenegro. The East Europeans started strongly, and Riesgo had to turn an early Jankovic free kick on to the post before the Red Star Belgrade striker beat the keeper with an acrobatic overhead kick on the quarter hour mark. Gradually though Spain got back in the game, with Iniesta in particular taking charge, and Jarque, Sergio García and Iniesta himself all tried their luck before the interval.

Iñaki Sáez brought on Jonathan at half time, and then turned to Arsenal's Cesc Fábregas a few minutes later. But they were unable to find a way through a well disciplined defence, and Serbia could have gone further ahead had Lazovic's shot not just missed the target. At the halfway stage of the competition the youngsters are five points adrift of leaders Belgium and four behind Serbia, and now need to win all their remaining games to have a real chance of making it to next year's finals.
