Villarreal had no problems recording a much needed 3-0 home win against Hammarby, taking them through to the league stage of the new look competition. Pellegrini's side were already 1-2 up from the first leg, and Guayre put them further in front overall in the ninth minute when he ran on to a long ball out of defence to shoot inside Covic's near post.

The Spaniards could have scored on two or three occasions more before the break, but they had to wait until a quarter of an hour in to the second half when Font ran on to a reverse pass from Guayre to chip the ball over the advancing Covic from left of goal.

Two minutes later the keeper was shown the red card for a foul outside of the area on Guayre, and with the game coming to an end, substitute Cazorla turned his man on the edge of the area and rolled a soft shot inside the post of his replacement Rytterbro. After two goal-less draws in their first two home games in the league, the result was just what the fans needed. They now have to consolidate this weekend against Zaragoza, who will surely be more of a match than the Swedes.
