Athletic Bilbao were beaten 3-1 by Vicente Del Bosque's Basiktas, with John Carew playing a starring role for the Turkish side. The ex Valencia striker caused problems for the Bilbao defence from the opening minute, and set up Günes with a pass out to the right of the area for him to fire in a shot which seemed to take a slight deflection off Gurpegui midway through the first half.

Ezquerro equalised soon after the restart with a skilful move after Yeste put him through, and for a few minutes Valverde's side were on top. But Carew appeared again to restore the lead against a passive defence, and only Lafuente and the woodwork prevented Besiktas from scoring before Akin ran through to round Lafuente and Karanka and wrap things up. The result means both sides are on three points, level also with Steau Bucharest and Parma, although Besiktas hava a game less.
