No doubt the most
spectacular result of the competition to date was Athletic Bilbao's 1-7
thrashing of Belgium's Standard Liège, taking them to the top of their
group. The Basque side still needed a point to be sure of reaching the next
round, and Ernesto Valverde put out a strong line-up. But they needn't have
worried, as Ezquerro put them two goals up with less than ten minutes on the
clock.
The Belgians appeared to be
back in the match though when Onyewu rose above the defence to head a Sergio
Conceiçao free kick down past Aranzubia. There was some concern as well
when Runje saved an Iraola penalty after Etxeberría was brought down by
Deflandre, but ten minutes before the break Yeste cut in from the right wing to
score a third goal.
The rout continued after the
break, with Ezquerro completing his hat-trick after Etxeberría set him
up, and Iraola not making any mistake with a second penalty a few minutes
later. Etxeberría was in all the action, and after setting up Del Horno
for a sixth goal, he finally got his name on the scoresheet after a weak shot
from substitute Urzaiz was only partly cleared by the defence. An amazing
result for Athletic, who until now had a reputation as one of the worst away
sides in the league this season. |
