Reigning UEFA Cup champions Valencia are out of the competition after losing on penalties to Steaua Bucharest, a result which cost the job of manager Claudio Ranieri who was sacked the following day. Defending a two goal lead from the first leg, the Spaniards held their own on a rain-soaked muddy pitch, although they had a lucky let off when Dica headed against the post early on, and Palop did well to save from Munteanu later in the first half.

Valencia's best chance came just before the interval when Rufete brought a good save out of Khomutovski, but just four minutes after the restart Christea ran on to a long ball out of midfield to round David Navarro and score. And twenty minutes before the end of normal time he broke free again to make it 2-0 on the night and level overall. Baraja had a goal disallowed for offside before the game went in to extra time, and Mista and Prita both failed to put away chances to win it for their respective sides.

But with no further goals the game went to the penalty shoot out, and although Palop saved Steaua's first kick, Baraja and Di Vaio missed the last two to give the Romanians a 4-3 victory. Ranieri's second spell at the club was over.
