An injury time strike from Edu gave Betis a slender lead going in to the second leg of this Champions League qualifier against Monaco. The Andalusians were making their first appearance in the competition, and after a brief delay for a floodlight failure they started well, new boy Rivera missing an early chance and Fernando and Assunçao both hitting the crossbar. With Oliveira out due to a mystery injury, cup hero Dani led the attack, and the young striker brought a couple of good saves out of Roma before heading another chance over the top either side of half time.

The French side had only caused any problems when Adebayor shot wide early on, but they gradually grew in confidence and Rivera had to clear an effort from Chevanton off the line before Doblas saved well from Adebayor. Assunçao rattled the bar again though with another free kick, and with Serra Ferrer urging his players forward Xisco found Edu for him to run on and curl a shot wide of the keeper. The crowd went wild and Betis are still on track for a place in the next round.
