Betis bowed out of the competition with a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Anderlecht, who had lost their last 12 games in Europe before this one. With his side languishing at the bottom of the league table and third place already assured, Serra Ferrer decided to rest some of his key players and give a run out to the likes of Castellini, Israel, Juanlu and B team youngster Juande, who was making his first team debut. But the replacements fared no better than their peers, and Iachtchouk and Tiote both went close as the Belgians dominated the opening minutes. Goor cleared a dangerous header from Rivas off the line following a Capi corner, but with the first half coming to a close Kompany ran on to a long ball from Goor to fire a shot under the legs of Doblas and put his side in to the lead.

Serra Ferrer made a double change at the break, bringing on Joaquín and Xisco, and Fernando fired a shot just wide of the target as the Spaniards tried to get back in the game. Xisco had a penalty appeal turned down and Capi's shot was deflected by a defender, but there was no way through, and Doblas had to be at his best to keep out Pujol when he broke free near the end. Zitka kept out Xisco and Assunçao in a final push, but the whistle went soon afterwards and Betis had lost. The third place means that they will still take part in the UEFA cup, but that was not what they had in mind at the start of the season.
