Valencia have a lot of work to do if they are to win their final and qualify for the UEFA cup after falling to a 1-0 defeat against Hamburg. Quique Flores's side were caught out by the quicker rhythm of the Germans and they were lucky not to fall behind when Mpenza's deflected shot brushed the bar on the quarter hour mark. Cañizares had to be at his best to get a hand to an effort from Jarolim later in the first half, but he could do nothing when Barbarez got behind the defence to head a Van der Vaart free kick down past him just five minutes after the restart.

Cañizares kept out another effort from Mpenza and a dangerous Van der Vaart free kick later on as the home side came forward looking for a second goal. But even so Valencia could have come away with an undeserved draw when Mista's shot was cleared off the line by Boulahrouz in the last minute. It was not to be though, and the Spaniards will have to win the second leg in Mestalla by two clear goals if they want to go through. At least though Barbarez will not be troubling them, the Bosnian striker getting himself sent off near the end for a second bookable offence.
