Intertoto Cup, second round, second leg

Mixed fortunes for the two Spanish clubs taking part in the second round of the Intertoto Cup, with Deportivo winning through despite losing 2-1 against Buducnost and Athletic Bilbao getting knocked out on penalties by Cluj after winning 1-0 on the night. With a three goal lead from the first leg,

Deportivo were not expected to have any problems beating Buducnost in Podgorica, and new coach Caparrós even left Valerón and Sergio at home. But Sekulic pulled a goal back midway through the second half, and although Toro Acuña and Rubén Castro tested the keeper with long shots, Vujovic gave the local fans hope with a second goal three minutes from the end. One more would have taken the game into extra time, but Munitis won a penalty in injury time which Acuña converted to make sure of a third round tie with either Slaven or Gloria.

Athletic Bilbao are out though after losing on penalties to Ecomax Cluj. Mendilibar was once again forced to put out a side packed with youngsters, but his team took the lead when Javi González got on the end of Jonan's cross to head past Turcas. Dañobieta, De Paula and Jonan all wasted chances and visiting defender Jula turned a cross against his own crossbar, but the youngsters ran out of steam and the Romanians could have scored a couple of times before the game went to a penalty shoot out. Ustaritz put the first kick over the bar though, and with their opponents converting all five it was all over. (09.07.05)
