Intertoto Cup finals, second leg

Disaster for the two Spanish sides in their respective finals, both losing on aggregate and failing to qualify for the UEFA cup. Deportivo La Coruña took a two goal lead to Olympique Marseille, and although they fell behind to an early strike from Ribery, Andrade levelled the scores in the eighth minute with an important away goal. Soon afterwards Duscher and Ribery were sent off after clashing, but the Galicians held on until midway through the second half when Meite restored the lead for the French side. Depor were left with nine men five minutes later when Capdevila was incorrectly shown a second yellow card for a foul committed by Acuña, and Olympique took advantage to score three more in the last quarter of an hour for a 5-1 final scoreline. Valencia also failed to overcome a 1-0 deficit from their first leg against Hamburg, their 0-0 result in the Mestalla stadium leaving them without European football this season. The closest they came to scoring was a header against the bar by Kluivert on the quarter hour mark, but after that they were unable to find a way through a well ordered defence. (23.08.05)
