UEFA Cup, second round, day 5

A late 1-0 victory against Maccabi Petach-Tivka ensured Espanyol a place in the third round. It was not an easy win though, and Lotina's side struggled for much of the game against a team who had lost their previous three group matches. Luis García hit the bar with a free kick before the break and Jonathan shot wide after the restart, but otherwise there were few chances, and when Gorka had to keep out Mbamba on a quick breakaway there whistles from some section of the crowd. But with seven minutes to go De la Peña's floated in a free kick, and although Jarque's header was blocked, the ball fell to Pochettino for him to score. The Israeli's were left with ten men four minutes later when David was sent off, and the final whistle went soon afterwards. (15.12.05)

Sevilla finished top of their group after drawing 1-1 at Bolton in the last game of the league stage. With qualification already in the bag, Juande Ramos put out a line up packed with reserve players. The English side needed a point though to make sure of reaching the next round, and they dominated the early minutes, Diouf, Jaidi and Okocha all going close. Luis Fabiano hit the post at the other end before the break, but midway through the second half substitute N'Gotty gave the locals the lead following a Fadiga corner. Ramos brought on Saviola and Adriano though, and soon afterwards Saviola won the ball for Martí to set up Adriano for the equaliser. Both sides had chances after that, but in the end they settled for a point which helped the two coaches achieve their respective objectives. (14.12.05)
