World Cup, knock out stage

Spain 1 - France 3

Spain are out of the World Cup after losing 1-3 to France. David Villa gave Luis Aragonés's young side the lead from the penalty spot after Thuram fouled Pablo in the area with just under half an hour on the clock, but Ribery latched on to a pass from Vieira to equalise a couple of minutes before half time. Substitutes Luis García and Joaquín both went close after the restart, but with seven minutes to go Vieira headed Zidane's free kick in off Sergio Ramos to put the French ahead, and with their opponents throwing everything forward, Zinedine Zidane beat his Real Madrid team mate Casillas on a rapid breakaway to send Spain home prematurely once again.
