Pre-season Fixtures 2005/2006

As usual there will be an intensive programme of pre-season matches, this year starting early July and going on to the end of August, when the league season begins again. We set out below the most important games involving first division clubs. NB. Games completed in red, pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. See aslo friendly fixtures section for matches taking place during the league season. (26.08.05)

2 and 9 Jul Intertoto cup second round
Deportivo La Coruña and Athletic Bilbao entered the competition at this stage. First leg results (02/07):
Deportivo 3 (Xisco, Sergio, Héctor) - Buducnost 0;
Cluj 1 - Athletic Bilbao 0.

Second leg results: (09/07):
Buducnost 2 - Deportivo 1 (Toro Acuña pen);
Athletic 1 - Cluj 0 (3-5 penalties).
Deportivo go through to the next round, Athletic are out.

12 Jul Valencia presentation match
Participation in Intertoto cup means that they are starting early this season, with pre-season training in Holland. Presented the new squad to fans on 12/07 in game against Girondins Bordeaux at the Mestalla stadium, which they lost 0-1 (Darcheville). Rest of summer programme will depend on how they get on in the Intertoto.
15 - 21 Jul Sevilla summer programme (July)
As usual starting off with friendlies, mainly against against regional opposition. First game against training camp hosts Cartaya, 15/07: W 0-2 (Vera, Antonio López). Then played West Bromwich Albion on 20/7; W 1-0 (Luis Fabiano) and Pilas on 21/07: W 1-5 (Kepa (2), Baptista (2), Antoñito).
16 - 21 Jul Real Sociedad in South Korea
Participated in the "Peace Cup" together with Tottenham, PSV, Lyon, Once Caldas, Boca Juniors, Sundowns and Seongham Ihlwa. First prize 2 million Dollars. Real were drawn in group B and lost 0-1 to Sundowns in their opening game on 16/07. Drew 0-0 in their second game against Boca Juniors on 18/07, and drew their last match against Spurs 1-1 (Mido / De Paula) on 21/07. Spurs beat Lyon in the final. 16/17 and 23 Jul Intertoto third round
Deportivo made it through and played Slaven, with the first leg at the Riazor on 16/07. W 1-0, with late goal from Rubén Castro.
Valencia also came in to the competition at this stage, drawing 0-0 at Gent (Belgium) on 17/07.

16 Jul - 7 Aug Real Madrid international tour
On another international tour this summer, expected takings around €25 million. Full programme:
16/07: Chivas (Mexico), Chicago, USA. W 3-1 (Mejía, Guti, Soldado / Palencia)
18/07: LA Galaxy (Los Angeles, USA). W 0-2 (Owen, Soldado).
23/07: Beijing Gouan (China). W 2-3 (Lu Jiang, Jelic / Raúl, Guti, Figo pen).
25/07: Tokyo Verdy (Japan). L 3-0 (Kobayashi, Washington, Yamada)
27/07: Jubilo Iwata (Japan). W 1-3 (Naruoka / Raúl, Ronaldo 2 (1 Pen)).
29/07: Thailand All Stars (Bangkok), W 0-3 (Zidane pen, Ronaldo, De la Red).

After a brief rest they will then be returning to Irding in Austria, where they will stay from 3-13 August. Arranged a friendly against local third division side Trenkwalder on 07/08 which they won 1-4 (Raul, Ronaldo, Portillo, Owen).
17 - 31 Jul Espanyol in China
Espanyol took part in an international tournament in China, with matches 17/07 in Nankin against Feyenoord (L 1-2 (Pochettino / Kuyt 2)) and 20/07 in Suzhou against Nacional de Montevideo (D 1-1 Jonathan / Castro). The last match ended in a brawl between players, with Biel and a Nacional player sent off). Feyenoord won the tournament after beating Nacional 3-0.
Returned for pre-season training at Perelada as usual, with friendlies against Toulouse in Perpignan on 27/07 (D 1-1, Akpa / Jofre), and Figueres on 31/07, L 1-0.
20 Jul - 3 Aug Betis warm up games
Play a couple of warm up games prior to their Champions' League qualifying round and Spanish Supercup fixtures, at first against regional sides Bollullos on 22/07, W 0-2 (Joao Tomas, Joaquín pen) and Almonte on 23/07, W 0-10 (Dani 4, Joao Tomas 3, Rivera, Benjamín, Cañas).
Take part in the "V Trofeo Internacional Guardiana y Copa América", which is being played at Ayamonte, near Huelva. First match against Vitoria Setubal on 28/07, the victor between the two cup winners of their respective countries being awarded the "Copa Ibérica". L 1-2, (Juanito / Chaves, Nandinho). Second match against Middlesbrough on 30/07, D 0-0.

Also play a friendly game or two to keep in trim. No news on fixtures against Sporting Lisbon and Sporting Braga, but played Xerex on 03/08, L 2-1 (Moreno, Ismael / Joaquín). Varela sent off.
21 - 23 Jul Villarreal warm up games
Like Betis, also warming up before Champions League qualifiers. Ridiculous 22-0 win against Vilamalla (Forlán (5), Guayre (3), Xisco (3), Jonathan (3), Valencia (2), Marcos (2), Font, Josico, Roger, Fuster). Then beat Navata 0-14 with three from Xisco Nadal and two from Forlán. More games to come, including trip to China (see below).
21 - 29 Jul Mallorca summer programme (July)
Travelled to Germany for a series of games as follows: 21/07: Traunstein, W 0-9 (Farinós, Luis García, Víctor (2), José, Rafita, Tuni, Okubo, Perera); 24/07: Wacker Burghausen, W 0-3 (Campano, Arango 2); 26/07: Blackburn Rovers, L 2-0 (Reid, Pedersen); 29/07: Unterhaching, match abandoned due to rain with score 1-1 (Luis García).
23 Jul Las Palmas v Atlético Madrid
Friendly match arranged in the Canary Islands as part of presentation of UD Las Palmas. With Fernando Torres injured and Maxi and Petrov only just joining, only Kezman played. The game ended in a 0-0 draw and Atlético won 2-4 on the penalty shoot-out.
23 Jul - 2 Aug Málaga summer programme (July)
The brother of Bolton's Fernando Hierro is Málaga director of sports and is setting up summer tour to bring the Costa del Sol side to England. They are staying in the De Vere Mottram Hall hotel near Wilmslow, playing the following fixtures: 23/07: Burnley, D 0-0; 27/07: Chesterfield, W 1-2 (Smith / Nacho, Hidalgo); 30/07: Preston, D 0-0; 02/08: Bolton, L 2-1 (Speed, Pedersen / Salva).
23 Jul - 3 Aug Barcelona summer programme
Barcelona began pre-season training in Aarhus, Denmark from 20th to 25th July, playing two friendly games, one on 23/07 against an East Jutland combination (W 0-4, Larsson, Eto'o, Gabri, Giuly), and one on 25/07 against AGF Aarhus (W 0-4, Deco, Larsson, Gabri, Maxi López).
From 28th July to 3rd August they go off on an international tour, with matches against Yokohama Mariners in Japan on 30/07, D 1-1 (Kurihara / Xavi) and against Shenzen Jianlibao in Macao on 03/08, W 0-9 (Iniesta, Larsson, Giuly, Eto'o 2, Messi 2, Gio, Deco).
23 Jul - 10 Aug Athletic Bilbao summer programme
Surprise elimination from Intertoto Cup means they have had to reschedule their programmme. Going to Germany and have arranged four fixtures as follows: 23/07: Rot Weiss Erfurt, W 0-1 (Llorente); 27/07: Lokomotiv Leipzig, W 0-9 (Etxeberria 4, 1 pen, Llorente 3, Tiko, Julen Guerrero); 28/07: Dynamo Dresden, L 3-2 (Urzaiz, Iraola); 31/07: Energie Cottbus, D 1-1 (Julen Guerrero).

Pre-season training in the Pyrenees, then friendly game against Huesca (A, 23/07: D 2-2, Moya, Bermejo / Oscar, Camacho).
Off to Shanghai (see below), then fly to Greece to play Panathinaikos 04/08, L 2-0, and Aris Salonika 05/08, W 3-4 (Ewerthon 2, Savio, Generelo).

27 - 30 Jul Shanghai International Tournament
To give it it's full name, "The Budweiser Shanghai International Tournament of Football". Sevilla, Villarreal and Zaragoza all take part together with a combined side from Shanghai, China, with semi-finals 27 July as follows:
27/07: Shanghai United 0 - Sevilla 2 (Baptista, Kepa).
28/07: Villarreal 2 (Senna, Forlán) - Zaragoza 1 (Savio).

30/07: Final, Sevilla 2 (Alves 2). Villarreal 0.
Two early goals from the Brazilian gave Sevilla the trophy.

27 Jul and 3 Aug Intertoto semi-final
There are six semi-final ties, played over two legs. Deportivo La Coruña and Valencia both made it through, the former play England's Newcastle and the latter Dutch side Roda.

Tour of England which was to include games against Everton and Middlesbrough now seems to be in doubt. 4 - 6 Aug Ramón Carranza trophy, Cádiz
Cádiz once again host this prestigious trophy, which this year celebrates it's 51st edition in the year they have won promotion back to the first division. Barcelona have finally been confirmed as one of the participants, the first time they have taken part since 1984, and in view of their presence in the Spanish Super Cup the tounament will take place earlier than usual. Sevilla will also be taking part, together with Portuguese side Sporting Braga. Results as follows:

05/08: Sevilla 1 (Alves) - Barcelona 1 (Edmilson), Barça won 1-3 on penalties;
06/08: 3/4 play-off: Sevilla 1 (Antonio López) - Braga 2 (Cesinho, Nunes);
Final: Cádiz 1 (Oli) - Barcelona 3 (Eto'o, Ronaldinho 2).
Two second half free kicks from Ronaldinho helped Barça come from behind to win the tournament.
5 Aug Juan Acuña Trophy in La Coruña
Deportivo managed to fit in this annual tournament between all their other commitments. Played in triangular format this year, with Birmingham the invited team and Deportivo B making up the numbers. Pandiani didn't play for either side, but watched the tournament from the stands! Results as follows:

5 - 12 Aug Real Sociedad summer programme
Start off against 3rd division side Tolosa on 06/08, W 0-3 (Rossato, Labaka, De Paula) then a match against Sporting Braga on 09/08, L 1-0 (Davide), followed by Eibar in Zarautz on 12/08, L 1-2 (Rossato / Arriaga, Moya).
5 - 16 Aug Mallorca summer programme (August)
Mallorca were invited to play in a triangular tournament on 05/08 together with second division sides Ciudad Murcia and Lorca, as part of Lorca's presentation. Results as follows:
Lorca 1 (Jorge Pérez) - Ciudad 0
Ciudad 0 - Mallorca 0
Lorca 0 - Mallorca 1 (Luis García pen)
Winners: Mallorca.

They then went on to play Lleida (A) on 12/08, W 0-3 (Luis García, Pereyra, Arango), before their own presentation match (Trofeo Parma de Mallorca) against Hertha Berlin on 16/08, the first time they have played this trophy match in eight years. L 2-3 (Okubo, Rafita / Salihovic, Okoronkwo, Cairo).
Followed up with participation in "Trofeo Iles Baleares". Lost in semi-final on penalties to Santa Eulalia after drawing 0-0. Santa Eulalia play Manacor in final.
6 - 13 Aug Espanyol European matches
Espanyol travelled to England to play Blackburn 06/08, L 4-0 (Reid, Pedersen, Kuqi 2, Riera and Kameni sent off) and Middlesborough 07/08, L 1-0 (Hasselbaink), and were then invited to Portugal for friendly game at the Dragon stadium against Porto on 13/08, L 3-0 (Jorginho 2, Lucho). Espanyol have yet to win a game this pre-season.
6 - 19 Aug Málaga summer programme (August)
Returned from England and will be playing a series of friendlies in Spain. Start though with a visit to Portugal to play Acadèmica de Coimbra on 06/08, D 0-0, and then the following fixtures: 12/08: Xerez in Mauli de Antequera, W 1-0 (Hidalgo pen); 14/08: Triangular tournament in Roquetas against the hosts and Almería, drew both games 0-0 and Almería won with 1-0 victory over the home side; 16/08: Granada A, W 1-4 (Esteban 2, Couñago, Ador); 19/08: Rayo Vallecano, A (Teresa Rivero trophy), L 4-0 (Armentano pen, Geni 2, De Gomar); 21/08: Poli Ejido, A, W 1-2 (Toedtli / Gerardo, Valcarce).
6 - 21 Aug Osasuna summer programme
Have announced friendly games against West Ham in London on 06/08, D 1-1 (Ferdinand / Puñal pen, 7-8 on penalty shootout), Eibar (at Aoiz) on 08/08, L 0-1 (Lezaun), Lleida on 10/08 (trofeo ciudad de Lleida - match suspended due to rainstorm), Zaragoza in Peralta on 13/08, W 0-1 (Romeo) and Alavés away on 17/08 (trofeo diputación de Alava), L 1-0 (Bodipo). 21/08: Presentation match in Pamplona against Uruguay's Peñarol. W 2-0 (Romeo, David López).
7 - 14 Aug Catalonia Cup (early rounds)
Played this tournament in summer last year rather than throughout the season, and are doing so again, with the first games already in June before sides break up for holidays.
5th round (07/08): A. Mataró 1 - Gramanet 2; B. Vilanova beat L'Hospitalet; C. Rubí lost to Sant Andreu.
6th round (10/08): D. Sant Andreu 0 - Terrassa 1: E. Vilanova 0 - Gramanet 2.

7th round: 14/08: Terrassa 1 - Nàstic 1 (0-3 pp);
17/08: Gramanet 0 - Lleida 0 (2-5 pp).

Barcelona and Espanyol to play Nàstic and Lleida in the semi-finals (although dates yet to be fixed).
9 - 23 Aug Sevilla summer programme (August)
09/08: Trofeo de la Vendimia. Triangular tournament in Jerez de la Frontera between Xerez, Sevilla and Olympiakos. Results as follows:

Sevilla 1 (Kepa) - Olympiakos 0.
Winners: Sevilla.

11/08: Sevilla played another friendly against Nacional de Montevideo, which they won 3-2 (Luis Fabiano pen, Antonio López, Aranda).
13/08: Training in Rondo, where they beat the local side 1-5 with second half goals from Luis Fabiano (2, 1 Pen), Kepa, Antonio López and new signing Saviola.
23/08: Constantina A, W 0-11 (Antoñito 4, Moreno 3, Jesuli 2, Alfaro, Gallardo).
9 and 23 Aug Intertoto final
Six sides play three finals as usual this year, with the winners qualifying for the UEFA cup. Villarreal beat Atlético in one of last year's finals.
Deportivo and Valencia are both through this year, and will play Olympique Marseille and Hamburg respectively. First leg 09/08: results as follows:
Deportivo 2 (Rubén, Carril) - Marseille 0;
Hamburg 1 (Barbarez) - Valencia 0.

Second legs 23/08: results as follows:

Marseille 5 (Niang 2, Ribery, Meite, Oruma) - Depor 1 (Andrade).

9 and 23/24 Aug Champions' League third qualifying round
Villarreal and Betis will enter at this stage, with one tie over two legs in an attempt to make it through to the league stage. Both sides got difficult opponents in the draw on 29/07, with Villarreal to play Everton (first leg in England) and Betis to play Monaco (first leg in Spain). First leg results as follows:
Everton 1 (Beattie) - Villarreal 2 (Figueroa, Josico);
Betis 1 (Edu) - Monaco 0.

Second leg results as follows:
23/08: Monaco 2 (Gerard, Maoulida) - Betis 2 (Oliveira 2);
24/08. Villarreal 2 (Sorín, Forlán) - Everton 1 (Arteta).
Both Betis and Villarreal qualified for the league stage.

10 Aug Trofeo Festa d'Elx
46th edition of Elche's annual trophy took place this summer, with Atlético Madrid invited to play the hosts this time around. Elche won 2-0 (Nino, Trotta), but complained as Atlético left all their stars at home.
10 - 21 Aug Cádiz summer programme (August)
Playing a series of friendlies against regional opposition once Ramón de Carranza trophy over, as follows: 10/08: San Fernando, W 1-3 (Acuña 2, Sesma), 13/08: Portuense, W 0-1 (Enrique); 17/08: Algeciras, W 0-1 (Enrique); 18/08: Linense, D 2-2 (Iván Ania, Mirosavljevic pen), 21/08: Nacional Montevideo H, W 1-0 (Iván Ania). 23/08: Puerto Real, A, W 0-4 (Estoyanoff, Mirosvljevic, Acuña, Benjamín).
12-14 Aug Trofeo Naranja in Valencia
Valencia's annual tournament at the Mestalla stadium, the Orange Trophy. was actually postponed last season due to lack of dates. This year the tournament was played over 3 days, with Olympiakos and Udinese invited. Matches as follows:
12/08: Valencia 1 (Mista) - Olympiakos 3 (Konstadinou, Toure, Babangida);
13/08: Udinese 4 (Di Natale 3) - Olympiakos 2;
14/08: Valencia 0 - Udinese 1 (Di Natale).
A poor performance by Valencia, and Udinese take away the trophy.
13 Aug Trofeo Ibérico
Trophy played in Badajoz every summer with first class sides. Atlético Madrid invited this year, and played Sporting Lisbon.
Atlético 3 (Torres 2, Luccin) - Sporting 1 (Rogerio). Two headed goals from Fernando won the trophy for Atlético.
13-15 Aug Teresa Herrera trophy, La Coruña
60th edition of the tournament scheduled again this summer. Hosts Deportivo La Coruña play a three way tournament against two Uruguayan sides Peñarol and Nacional. Results as follows:
13/08: Depor 2 (Tristán, Guzman) - Nacional 1 (Victoriano);
14/08: Nacional 3 (Victorino, Albin, Alves) - Peñarol 0;
15/08: Depor 2 (Munitis 2) - Peñarol 1 (Gaglianone).
Depor won their own tournament for the 6th year running, rounding off an excellent pre-season.
13 and 20 Aug Spanish Supercup
Two leg fixture between league champions Barcelona and cup winners, Betis. First leg played at home of cup winners, with the return a week later in the Nou Camp. Results as follows:
13/08: Betis 0 - Barcelona 3 (Giuly, Eto'o, Ronaldinho).
20/08: Barcelona 1 (Eto'o) - Betis 2 (Dani 2).

13 - 23 Aug Alavés summer programme
Toured USA at beginning of month (see above). Fixtures confirmed in August against Numancia H. 13/08, L 1-4 (Mena / Cedrón, Tevenet 3), Osasuna H, 17/08 (presentation match), W 1-0 (Bodipo), Peñarol H, 20/08, W 4-2 (Bodipo2, De Lucas, Wesley), Cultural Leonesa A, 21/08, W 1-4 (Lazen, Mena, Aloisi, Arthuro).
14 Aug Puskas Testimonial
Real Madrid played a combination side from Hungary in honour of Ferenç Puskas, who is gravely ill in hospital. Madrid won 1-3 with goals from Zidane (pen), Ronaldo and Owen, with Kenesei replying for the hosts. Some doubts about where proceeds were going, but in the end Puskas received a cheque for €91,800.
15 - 18 Aug Colombino trophy, Huelva
Recreativo hosted another of the big summer competitions, the 41st time the tournamenthas taken place. Once again they invited two first division sides, this year Athletic Bilbao and Sevilla. Results as follows:
15/08: Recreativo 3 (Rosu, Uche 2) - Athletic 0;
16/08: Athletic 2 (Javi González, Julen Guerrero) - Sevilla 3 (Kepa 2, Fernando Sales);
18/08: Recreativo 1 (Calle pen) - Sevilla 2 (Adriano, Alves).
Winners: Sevilla.
16 - 21 Aug Ciutat de Barcelona trophy et al
Espanyol's annual presentation match which they played in their Montjuic Olympic stadium against Olympique Marseille. L 1-2 (Jofre / Mendoza, Nasri), but at least played a bit better.
21/08: Last pre-season game against Olympiakos away. L 1-0 (Konstantinou). Ended summer without winning a single game.
17 Aug Spain friendly match
A pre-season warm up for "la selección", this time very important given the World Cup qualifier against Serbia at the beginning of September. Rivals were Uruguay, and the match took place in Gijón. Won 2-0 with an own goal from Pablo García and a penalty from Vicente. A second friendly will be played against Canada in Santander on 3rd September. See separate section for more details.
18 - 20 Aug Triangular tournament in Santander
Racing host a triangular tournment over three days in August to celebrate Santander 250.
18/08: Racing 1 (Aganzo) - Real Sociedad 0;
19/08: Atlético 2 (Braulio, Arizmendi) - Real Sociedad 0;
20/08: Racing 1 (S. Dalmat) - Atlético Madrid 1 (Gabi).
Racing's Vitolo and Marqués sent off in last match. Atlético won the trophy on the penalty shoot out.
18 - 21 Aug City of Vigo trophy et al
Celta presentation match. Cancelled last season as they were laying new turf (and also to lack of interest after they were relegated?). Back though this year, with fixture against Zaragoza on 18/08. Won 2-1 with goals from David Silva and Baiano, with Lafita replying late on for the visitors.
Don't stop there tough, as play regional side Coruxo on 19/08, W 1-3 (Baiano, Josiño og, Canobbio) and then Sevilla A, 21/08, L 5-0 (see below).
19 Aug Villarreal's "Trofeo de la Cerámica"
Sixth edition of Villarreal's annual tournament, Played Uruguay's Peñarol on Friday night to give them time to prepare for CL match on 24th vs Everton. Villarreal won on penalties after drawing 2-2 (Guayre, Figueroa). Keeper Barbosa sent off in 5th minute after giving away penalty.
21 Aug Palermo v Athletic Bilbao
The traditional "Homenaje al socio" match did not take place this summer, but arranged a friendly game against Palermo in Italy on 21/08 which they won on penalties after drawing 1-1 (Yeste).
21 Aug Sevilla presentation
Sevilla played Celta Vigo in their presentation game. Second half substitutes Saviola and Kanouté hit it off right away as the hosts won 5-0 (Kepa, Antonio López, Saviola 2, Kanouté).
23 Aug XXVII Santiago Bernabeu trophy
Real Madrid's presentation match took place at the end of August against an MLS All Stars side made up of the best players from the American league, including well known names such as Donovan, O'Brian and Djokaeff. Madrid won 5-0 with a goal from a free kick by Beckham and then strikes from Ronaldo 2, Guti and Raúl. Woodgate came on for the last 5 minutes to make his debut.
24 Aug Gamper tournament, FC Barcelona
40th edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament took place as usual this summer. Italian champions Juventus were the team invited this time around. Match drawn 2-2 (Iniesta, Gio / Del Piero pen, Trezeguet epn). Juventus won 2-4 on penalty shoot out.
