Under 17 XXXII Atlantic
International Cup
7-10 February 2006.
Spain finished second to hosts Canary Islands in the latest edition of
the annual Atlantic tournament. Juan Santiesteban's side got off to a good
start in Maspalomas with a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland, Emilio Nsue
getting both goals late on. The Mallorca midfielder got on the end of Yuri's
cross to score the first, and then headed home a cross from Vergara. In the
other group match, the Canary Islands beat Austria 2-0.
Spain were caught by
surprise in their second game though, losing 1-0 to the Canary Islands
in Vecindario. The only goal was scored by Romario after Ramsés and
Armiche combined to set him up early in the second half. Elsewhere Northern
Ireland beat Austria 1-0.
The third game was against
Austria's under 18 side in Gran Canaria, and Spain ran out 3-1
winners. It was not enough though to win the trophy as the Canary
Islands drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland in their match. Rubén
Ramos opened the scoring on the quarter hour mark, and Austria had Sand sent
off before the break. Emilio (on a counter attack) and Omar (with a header from
Vergara's corner) increased the lead after the restart before Ernestbrunner got
a late consolation for their opponents.
