Two late goals from Stade Rennes scuppered a good result for Osasuna and left the Pamplona based side with an uphill battle for the second leg. Javier Aguirre put out an experienced side, and Milosevic and Romeo could both have scored early on. But Frei got on the end of Monterrubio's cross to put the French side ahead later in the first half, and although Raúl García shot over the bar just before the interval the Spaniards were still behind at the break.

The introduction of Webó for the second half changed things at first, the substitute heading on a long clearance by Ricardo allowing Milosevic to get the vital away goal. Cruchaga also went close with a free kick, but after that Rennes dominated, Cuéllar clearing an effort from Didot off the line and Ricardo making three first class saves from the dangerous Frei.

With Osasuna pinned back in their own half it was just a matter of time, and Frei finally got his second of the night with an excellent volley from another Monterrubio cross. And the Swiss striker came close to a hat-trick when he hit the bar with the keeper beaten before ex Espanyol and Deportivo midfielder Mustapha Hadji scrabled the third goal near the end.
