A late 1-0 victory against Maccabi Petach-Tivka ensured Espanyol a place in the third round. It was not an easy win though, and Lotina's side struggled for much of the game against a team who had lost their previous three group matches. Luis García hit the bar with a free kick before the break and Jonathan shot wide after the restart, but otherwise there were few chances, and when Gorka had to keep out Mbamba on a quick breakaway there were whistles from some section of the crowd.

But with seven minutes to go De la Peña's floated in a free kick, and although Jarque's header was blocked, the ball fell to Pochettino for him to score. The Israeli's were left with ten men four minutes later when David was sent off for a foul on Moisés Hurtado, and the final whistle went soon afterwards. Palermo's win against Broendby though meant that the Catalans finished second in their group, and although that ensured them a return game at home in the next round, they will have to face one of the sides entering the competition from The Champons League, Germany's Schalke '04.
